Emergent

so, i've browsed some of the sites that talk about the emergent movement if you will. i've heard some talk about going to the conferences in san diego and nashville, but i'm curious to hear from those who have been around, are familiar with, and who can verbalize in a brief way, what emergent means to you. i think it was hybels who said that a vision statement should be brief enough to put on the front of a shirt. what is a "simple" statement to characterize what emergent is? i'd like to hear some thoughts from you have maybe seen, heard, experienced, or been exposed to. i might be doing the exact thing that emergent is challenging the church on, which is trying to fit and categorize an idea of something (God) into a small box. anyone wanna try anyway? by the way, shane has some flickr pictures on his links.

Hello Isaiah! Great discussion starter! Emergent . . hmmmm. I have been reading about the 'emergent trends' for about two years now and in the last year have intentionally gathered together some information on the 'movement' if you will. I'm still not sure I have it figured out, and to be honest, I don't think that the emergent thing wants to be 'figured out'. From a pragmatic angle, the emerging church offers mainstream Christianity an opportunity. An opportunity to understand itself - much more clearly. It's like when a parent gazes intently at their child and ponders the significance their life has had on their child - for better or worse. The 'Emerging Church' is the question. It's the conversation. It's the deep breath or sigh of relief. It's the comtemplative repose before the forward charge. The 'Emerging Church' is a catharsis of sorts for the modern Church, our opportunity to truly deal with ourselves and re-emerge a more engaging, holistic, catalyst for the arrival of the Kingdom of God. Just a few thoughts . .
